Wear your support This painting is created by Ezekiel, who was rescued in 2018.
Ezekiel is only 5 years old when we rescue him and his older brother, Nsidibe. They are living with their sister and stepfather when their mother becomes seriously ill and dies shortly after. Ezekiel and his brother is accused of killing their own mother, so they have no other choice but to run away from home.
When their father hears what has happened, he comes to the village to bring his 3 children home to live with him and his new wife. However, Ezekiel and Nsidibe do not feel safe with their father, who later has 10 more children with their stepmother.
Their sister stays with their father, but the boys continue to live on the streets. It is very common that children run away from home when they experience a lot of poverty, instability and death. Today, Ezekiel and Nsidibe have a good relationship with both their father and stepmother, as we have taken them on many home visits over the years, most recently in January 2025.
Ezekiel is a very talented painter and in 2024, Ezekiel won a state art competition. We are very proud of how far he has come.
Children’s art
Art plays an important role in the children’s development and healing process, as it enables them to express past traumas, while also giving room for creative expressions of ideas and dreams for the present and future.
As one of our children (Joy) once told Anja in art class: ”I feel free when I paint”.
