This painting is created by Gladys, who was rescued in 2017.
Anja and David got an emergency call involving a serious case of 4 children accused of being witches. They were severely beaten and abused every day. They were barely surviving and some of the local villagers had decided to kill them.
Gladys was among the 4 children, we rescued that day. She was the youngest and most vulnerable. Living on the streets as a little girl is brutal and very dangerous. Gladys was very traumatized. She had cuts all over her body.
Today, Gladys is a strong athletic woman who took the silver medal in discus in Akwa Ibom Athletics Sport Competition November 2023. In April 2025, she qualified again to compete in Niger Delta Athletics Sport Competition. Out of thousands of talented young athletes from 9 States, Gladys took 6th position in javelin throw.
Gladys wants to inspire young women around the world to never give up and to always follow their dreams no matter what challenges life throws at them. “Always believe in yourself. You are braver than you think,” she says.
Children’s art
Art plays an important role in the children’s development and healing process, as it enables them to express past traumas, while also giving room for creative expressions of ideas and dreams for the present and future.
As one of our children (Joy) once told Anja in art class: ”I feel free when I paint”.
When you purchase a painting created by the children at Land of Hope, you give them a voice in the world that once rejected them. Your support not only heals their wounds, but it also gives them a feeling of being worthy and loved.
All the money from the sale of the children’s art goes entirely to Land of Hope.
