Any child infected with malaria is at risk of dying if treatment does not begin in time. And with 95 children living at Land of Hope, our nurse at the clinic tests and treats children with malaria almost every day.
Even though all our children sleep under mosquito nets, mosquitoes can still bite in the early evening before bedtime.
Malaria is widespread in Nigeria, especially during the rainy seasons in both spring and autumn.
It is heartbreaking to watch a child suffer from malaria. High fever, severe headaches, muscle pain and chills are common symptoms. If the children receive treatment in time, the fever and other symptoms quickly subside. But if treatment is delayed, serious complications can develop, including cerebral malaria, lung failure, kidney failure and liver failure. These complications require intensive treatment, and many children risk losing their lives.
That is why it is lifesaving for us to keep malaria test kits and medicine stocked in our clinic, so our nurse can always test and treat any child who shows symptoms of malaria.
