The Reunification Pack strengthens healing and future hope
For more than 12 years, Land of Hope has worked intensively to reunite children with their families. This work, known as “reunification”, is a vital part of the fight against the harmful superstition that leads to witchcraft accusations against thousands of children in Nigeria every year.
For many people, it may seem difficult to understand why children return to the villages where they were once called witches. But Land of Hope’s experience shows that reunification is essential – both for the children’s emotional healing and for preventing new witchcraft accusations.
It is important that the children remain part of their local communities. When families and village leaders see the children return as happy, healthy children who go to school, they become living proof that they were never witches. Keeping the children away from their families would only reinforce the old accusations.
That is why Land of Hope works through dialogue, education and repeated home visits with families, chiefs and local communities to break down superstition and create understanding of children’s rights.
Samuel was reunited with his grandparents
Samuel’s father accused him of being a witch and tried to kill him with a machete. Samuel escaped and hid alone in the bush.
For years, Land of Hope searched for his family. During a home visit, Samuel suddenly recognised his father riding a motorbike, and the team followed him. It led them to Samuel’s grandparents.
When they saw Samuel again, they were both shocked and happy. They had rejected their son’s actions and welcomed Samuel back with love and care.
Today, contact has been re-established, and the reunification process continues. Samuel is no longer alone in the bush. He attends school, lives safely at Land of Hope and has regained a sense of family, belonging and hope.
