Wear your support This painting is created by Grace, who was rescued in 2013 together with her younger sister Victoria and younger brother William.
One very warm summer day, Anja and David got a phone call. Three young children were being tortured and kept captive in a house by their uncle. Even though Anja was 8 months pregnant, dealing with back pain and severe nausea, they rushed to the village.
The uncle claimed that the children were witches. They had been severely abused and tortured. The uncle demanded a lot of money from Anja and David if they wanted to take the children with them. They had to involve the paramount ruler who eventually gave Anja and David permission to bring the children to safety at Land of Hope.
William and Victoria were very scared when Anja and David found them. Grace, however, was calmer. It was as if she knew they would be saved. They were finally free from torture and abuse.
Over the years, Grace has stayed calm and peaceful. She is very protective of Victoria and William. But do not let her calmness fool you. She is a very strong and intelligent girl, always smiling and having fun.
January 16, 2026, Grace celebrated her matriculation into College of Nursing Sciences. We invited her mother who is a widower and had no chance of protecting Grace, William and Victoria when they were accused of being witches by the local pastor.
Children’s art
Art plays an important role in the children’s development and healing process, as it enables them to express past traumas, while also giving room for creative expressions of ideas and dreams for the present and future.
As one of our children (Joy) once told Anja in art class: ”I feel free when I paint”.
