Created by Hope

This painting was created by Hope, whom Land of Hope rescued on January 30, 2016.

The rescue made headlines around the world. It was the moment the world first saw an abused “witch child” and followed the story of a little boy whose life was hanging by a thread.

Since his rescue, Hope has never been able to speak. He communicates through sounds and expressions of his own, but he does not use spoken words. Over the years, his hearing has been examined several times, and the tests have shown significant hearing loss. He is what many would describe as deaf and mute. We have tried providing hearing aids, but Hope does not wish to wear them. Instead, he thrives through his own unique way of communicating — much of it still expressed through dance and art.

In May 2026, Hope spread his wings and began attending a special boarding school for deafblind children. It was a major step toward a future that once seemed impossible. During school breaks, he returns home to Land of Hope, where he loves spending time in the art classroom, painting side by side with the other children.

Children’s Art

We use art education as a therapeutic tool in our work with the children’s mental health and emotional well-being.

For many of the children, talking about their trauma is difficult. Art classes provide a safe space where they can express feelings and experiences that are hard to put into words. Some children paint scenes from their past, while others focus on their dreams and hopes for the future.

What they all have in common is their remarkable talent. Many of the children have won art and talent competitions across Nigeria.
