This painting is created by John, who was rescued by Land of Hope 8 years ago.

It was a very hot day in the middle of the drought season. David and Anja were looking for 3 boys who had been accused of being witches. They had been abandoned by their families and outcasted from the village they were born in – one of them was John.

Anja found John hiding in a bush. He was with David, who was the other boy, and the third boy, Gideon, had been hiding in an abandoned building. John and David had both been severely beaten and slashed with knives all over their bodies. They hid in the bush because they knew the villagers were looking for them and wanted to kill them.

That day, all 3 boys were brought to safety at Land of Hope.

Today, John is the sweetest boy, who feels great empathy for other people and has the most beautiful smile. He has also become a strong and sporty boy who loves to play soccer all day long.

Children’s Art

We use visual arts education as a therapeutic tool to support the children’s mental well-being. Many of them find it difficult to speak openly about their traumatic experiences. Art classes offer a safe and expressive outlet, allowing them to communicate emotions that can be challenging to articulate verbally.

Some children paint scenes related to what they have endured, while others focus on their hopes, dreams, and visions for the future. What they all share is remarkable artistic talent, and many have already won multiple talent competitions in Nigeria.
