This painting is created by Imaobong, who was rescued in 2017.

They accused me of killing my father and called me a witch.

They would beat me every day. They did not give me food.

My mother and others from the village used an iron to burn me.”

Imaobong was only 6 years old when we rescued her. A terrified little girl with many scars. Not only on her soul, but on her entire body from abuse and torture.  She was in so much pain and very traumatized.

Over the years, we have witnessed Imaobong overcome her struggles and fears. She is extremely hardworking, excelling in both school and art. Anja always tells her, that she admires her strength and resilience.

Very soon, Imaobong is ready to start university. When she looks at her scars, she sometimes cries because she is reminded of her brutal past. But she also tells us, that the scars show her that she made it through the darkness. And there is a lot of power in that.

Children’s Art

We use visual arts education as a therapeutic tool to support the children’s mental well-being. Many of them find it difficult to speak openly about their traumatic experiences. Art classes offer a safe and expressive outlet, allowing them to communicate emotions that can be challenging to articulate verbally.

Some children paint scenes related to what they have endured, while others focus on their hopes, dreams, and visions for the future. What they all share is remarkable artistic talent, and many have already won multiple talent competitions in Nigeria.
