The School Pack gives a child access to education
In Nigeria, public schools often cannot provide even the most basic facilities such as desks and chairs. If a child does not have a desk and chair, they may have to sit on the cold floor, often filled with holes, or squeeze into a windowsill with other children. Land of Hope works with a local carpenter who builds school desks and chairs for all our children.

School uniforms are mandatory in Nigeria. If a child does not have a uniform, they may be denied access to the classroom.

Knowledge is the key to fighting superstition
Education is a fundamental right for every child, yet 18.5 million children in Nigeria do not attend school because the costs are too high. This is the highest number in the world – and it has serious consequences for the country’s development.

We know that when children, regardless of their background and circumstances, gain access to education, it has a positive impact on the whole community.

Land of Hope works purposefully to ensure that the children we rescue do not just survive, but receive an education as the foundation for an independent life. We make sure they attend local schools, where they are integrated with other children from the surrounding communities. This is vital to our work in breaking harmful superstition, because they must not be removed from the local area. Instead, we must show that they are not witches.

School helps heal children’s trauma
The children at Land of Hope love going to school. They wake up early and proudly put on their uniforms every morning, because they never take education for granted. They love learning new things and work hard on their homework every single day.

For them, school is about much more than learning and knowledge. It is where their trauma begins to heal. It is where they slowly come back to life and regain confidence and trust in the world.

One of our boys, Elijah, could barely speak a word of English when we rescued him in 2017.

After his mother died, his aunt accused him of being a witch. He was abandoned and later tortured. A villager found him on the street and brought him to the police station, who contacted us. Elijah arrived at Land of Hope as a deeply traumatised and paralysed little boy, with cuts all over his body. We had to help him back to life – and school became the safe haven that gave him hope for a secure future.

After only two months in school, Elijah could speak fluent English. Today, he receives top grades, and besides being a kind and caring boy, he loves reading books and playing football with the other children at Land of Hope.
