On a scorching day during the dry season, Anja and David were searching for three boys who had been accused of witchcraft and abandoned by their families. One of them was John.
They found him hiding in a bush. Beaten, wounded, and cut with knives, he was desperately trying to stay out of sight. Together with two other boys, he was hiding from villagers who wanted him dead.
That day, all three boys were brought to safety.
Today, John is a completely different young man. With his warm smile and caring heart, he brings joy to everyone around him. He is strong, compassionate, and full of life, and he loves nothing more than spending hours on the football field with his friends.
This painting is a powerful reminder that even a child who has experienced unimaginable cruelty can heal, thrive, and dream again when given love, safety, and hope ❤️
Children’s Art
We use art education as a therapeutic tool in our work with the children’s mental health and emotional well-being.
For many of the children, talking about their trauma is difficult. Art classes provide a safe space where they can express feelings and experiences that are hard to put into words. Some children paint scenes from their past, while others focus on their dreams and hopes for the future.
What they all have in common is their remarkable talent. Many of the children have won art and talent competitions across Nigeria.
